in one of the rooms there was a painting of a girl who had a genetic mutation which caused her to be covered in hair. like everywhere. It’s very rare, so she was invited to court and she actually had a place in the court because she was such an oddity. She wasn't mocked or anything, just different so she had a place in court. Her father was the first one to have this mutation, and he married a beautiful young woman, so that was the basis for beauty and the beast, this girl’s father.
We were taken up into the attics which had original 16th
century wood beams. Amazing. The attics were also reserves for antiques that
had yet to be restored, so it was very interesting to see. There was one room of
frames and another of furniture. There was even an old bathtub! It was neat. i feel like i am running out of ways to say amazing and neat, but everything is just that. oh well, parisian life is hard i guess.
After that room, we were taken into a room that is usually
used for their education tours and dance instruction class. He showed us the
costume, and I asked if I could try it on, and he was like sure, so I put on
the cape and the collar. At that moment the other group (of course) walked in, so he was like, voila your new queen. (which of course I am the queen) and
it was slightly embarrassing, but it was hilarious.
After the chateau, we
were taken up to a different tower where we were able to overlook the whole
city of blois that was separated by the loire river. It was incredible and
breathtaking and one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life.
i am trying to condense my posts so there aren't so many, so this is a little scattered, but on wednesday afternoon after st. malo, we drove to le mont saint michel. it is an abbey that was built on top of a small island. it's packed with tourists, but the abbey is stunning. also, it looks just like harry potter. before we got to the island, we had to take a shuttle up and while we were waiting, we saw some beautiful horses. we went over to them and started petting them and the driver got down and told us their names (prince and i can't remember the other) but they were beautiful, and the driver actually seemed to really appreciate us petting them and talking to them.
Mont Saint-Michel is on an island. It was built on an actual
rock. Our tour guide
was very good. She was kind of cynical, but knew a ton about the architecture. The whole thing is built of rocks, so she would explain
how it’s impossible how they did what they did, so the whole time I was
honestly afraid that the ceiling was going to fall down. The abbey was built
around and on top of a huge triangular rock. You can go in the basement and see
the rock, it’s part of the foundation.
At the very top of the abbey is the cloitre. It is green
and beautiful and looks straight out of harry potter (hold up. accio wand!). It was my favorite, and
the end to a really long tour. It was really good but we were so tired, so it
was hard. Our tour ended at closing time and we went a little over, so we had to be completely silent as we went
back in the chapel. The monks were in their white robes and white hoods and
starting to pray. You can feel the spirit in places like that. It was the
neatest experience. I have been so incredibly blessed to see these extra things
like that.
