this labor day weekend my friends and i went on a #veryappropriateholidayvaction because we went to mount rushmore! man, i love those big heads. it has always been my dream to go to mount rushmore on a national holiday, and while i was thinking more like memorial day, flag day, or even the fourth of july, this one was pretty great and one for the books!
we planned to spend all three days in SD, but due to some things coming up, we only had two days, and i wouldn't change it for anything! it was so fun, and i went with the perfect people! saturday morning, my friends leah, diana, conner, and i headed to mount rushmore at 3 in the morning. we had ten and a half hours to drive, and we are all huge america/history nerds, so we listened to the america playlist on spotify and had the most amazing book ever called America: A Patriot's Handbook, from which we read speeches and inaugural addresses. it was the best car ride ever. also, freedom by akon was our theme song for the trip. whenever it came on everyone stopped and sang it, it was beautiful.
we got to south dakota and decided i'm moving there because it is SO beautiful. the forests and the farmlands, horses and cows were everywhere, and imagine it when it snows! and the drive up to mount rushmore from the the main street! swoon! we spent saturday afternoon at the big heads and the museum, we were pretty tired and hungry afterwards, so we decided to drive to our hotel.
we were a little bummed because we had to choose a hotel that was about an hour and a half away because we waited so long to book it. who knew that so many people would want to go to south dakota for labor day?! anyway, we had a couple different options that were all about a half hour away, so we chose one that was east of keystone because it was right by badland national park in case we wanted to visit there, too. as we were driving up to the hotel in wall, sd, there was literally a billboard every 30 feet advertising a drugstore called wall drug, right by our hotel. the power of good advertising drove us to the wall drug literally five minutes before it closed. we peeked inside and decided to go back the next day.
we went swimming and then planned to watch national treasure (the second one because they go to mount rushmore of course) but we all fell asleep two minutes into the movie.
the next morning we probably spent three hours at wall drug buying souvenirs that we needed. they have like twenty souvenir shops packed into one and it's full of native american things and cowboy things and basically now it is my dream to live in wall, south dakota and have a farm and go to wall drug every day. they have old fashioned candy and donuts and basically a cowboy mall with boot stores and hat stores and books stores full of books about native americans, cowboys, and south dakota/wyoming. in the back of the store they have a big area full of places to take pictures, and you better believe we took pictures. so, yes, three hours later we headed back to mount rushmore to finish the day there. we went to the sculpture's studio and the gift shop (you know those suckers that gift shops are designed for, the ones who spend way too much money in souvenir shops, yeah that's me. and i just love them and can spend hours looking at them, they are like little museums themselves!) and soaked in as much of those big heads as we could (after we read more america facts in the car, of course).
around 5 that evening we started back to provo. the trip was quite uneventful, except when we were listening to "get out of my dreams and into my car" by billy ocean, we had a little too much fun and i got my first speeding ticket ever. i'm a criminal! i have a record! ahhhhhhhhh. i got really lucky the ticket was pretty cheap and the cop lady was very nice and was making jokes with us, so i felt better about it all and we continued on. about 12:30 in the morning we had to switch drivers, and it was my job to keep the driver awake, so we were almost delirious by 3 in the morning when we got back to provo. luckily we had no trouble driving back, and there was no traffic. when we had finally made it to university avenue, we had barely gotten off the highway and the speed limit is still 55. everyone was asleep except for diana and i who were slap happy and i see the outline of two HUGE stags right in the middle of our lane. it was so dark it's a blessing i even saw them. we were only about fifty feet from them when i saw them and diana didn't see them. i slapped my hands over my eyes and screamed "oh my gosh there's deer!" and by some miracle maneuver by diana she swerved the car around the deer. we were still going 55 and so it's a blessing that 1. we managed to avoid the deer and 2. we didn't flip when she swerved because needless to say everyone was awake and there was some major over correction because we were going so fast and the deers were so close to us when i saw them. a whole roadtrip without any problems and then five minutes from home we would have been wrecked. the car would have been totaled and there's no way diana and i wouldn't have been hurt because two huge deers would have smashed into our window.
we had the best trip ever, and i'm so grateful for america, friends who are so willing to drive basically for a whole day just to spend a day at mount rushmore and who love doing american/history things with me and three day weekends. next time, we're going to washington dc!

Florida {Part 2}: dunes and tunes
sorry it's taken a little while to get to part 2 but it's a super long post. I hope it's worth the wait!
[friday]
Friday started a little later than Thursday (the sun and beach and shopping really wear you down I guess) but we woke up to cloudy skies. We were worried we wouldn't be able to go to the beach, but we decided to test our luck.
and we were a little tired, so we looked kinda rough...obviously...
we headed out a little bit better prepared than thursday and decided to go to Fort Walton Beach instead of Pensacola. Pensacola was fun and had some funny times and cute lifeguards, but there was hotels and a ton of people and lifeguards.... We drove about an hour and got a little lost which really shouldn't happen with a gps and a gps on your phone and were driving down a long strip of highway and saw cars pull off the side of the road by some sand dunes. We decided to check it out because we didn't really want to go to the "official" beaches that you pay for. We parked and walked a little ways past some beautiful sand dunes...
...and found a great beach: no lifeguards, only 7 other people, and the waves weren't high hazard! I wish we could've spent all day there! It was incredible! Walking on the beach, jumping in the water, finding shells, getting more sunburned...c'est la vie!
and of course, even though we are...cough cough *adults*...cough cough.... we HAD to make a sand castle. We were at the beach for heaven's sake! and I AM the queen and need a castle...
pretty sweet, I know.
This is where we just pulled off the road, it seemed kinda sketchy at first, but it ended up being the best part of the trip!
we were really really really sad to leave the beach, but after 4 hours, it started raining and thundering.
after we went to the beach, we drove into Destin, which was literally 1 minute away from Fort Walton and we changed into our regular clothes. At that point, we were SO sunburned and it was quite uncomfortable to say the least. It was a little hilarious how much heat we were radiating.
We went to the mall and did a little shopping (but not too much, I promise!)
We then went to one of those Waves stores that give you a headache just looking at them, you know the ones with 10000000000 tshirts in them?
And because I am the best sister in the world, I got tshirts for all of my siblings and then of course, one for me. Olivia got some sweats and a tshirt to wear on the drive home because we decided we wanted to be comfy since we were sunburned.
Also in the store I found the perfect shirt for my dad. I should've gotten it!
(it says dads against daughters dating. shoot the first one and the word will spread) hahahahahahahaha
We had a little time to kill before dinner, and Olivia wanted to get a Build-a-Bear for her little sister, so we found one in this HUGE outdoor mall.
[side note] It turned out to be the same mall that I went to last summer when I went to my Aunt and Uncle's house with a HUGE Bass Pro Shop and a big plastic great white shark that my dad stuck everyone's heads in.
After we located the Build-a-Bear, we headed towards it, and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something.
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR
and the back door and the side door and the garage door and all the windows!
It was an actual FROCK CANDY STORE!
now, you probably don't think this is really exciting, but all my roommates will get it. I love this store and to think there was an actual physical store right next to me! Well, I had to get a picture. And go in.
and it was magical! Definitely my new even more favorite store and I got a skirt for $7. Even better!
But back to Build-a-Bear, we were pretty much the oldest ones there by probably 10 years. Haha. The girl at the stuffing station looked at us kinda weird until we explained to her it was for a younger sibling. We then took a trip down memory lane and got to take one of the fabric hearts that you put in the bears and rub it on our foreheads for smarts, our cheeks for smiles, our noses for our favorite smells, and our bellies for our favorite foods. We then rubbed it to make it start "beating", made a wish my wish was that she will always follow her dreams no matter who tells her she can't or how scary they are, then kissed the little hearts before we put them inside the bear. It was actually really exciting.
After Olive Garden for dinner, we headed back home completely full, extremely sunburned, but soooooo happy!
We took showers then rented This Means War
and as Morgan told me her mother put it, the movie is "such a good movie; so inappropriate but so good" haha I couldn't put it any better myself. Plus I love Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine. Win win! Win win! (movie reference anyone?)
Friday night was pretty hilarious because we were so sunburned. Every time someone moved, or tried to move, you could hear the wincing of pain. (I know I sound awful laughing at Olivia's and my pain, but when you're both sunburned beyond belief it turns out being funny)
[saturday]
We seemed to have perfect timing. We woke up Saturday to pouring rain. It actually rained every day, but only in the afternoon when we went shopping AFTER we were at the beach! And after TONS of country music and tons of ocean air, we were really sad to leave.
After breakfast and saying goodbye, we ran back and forth in and out of the pouring rain to load the car and headed out. It rained for probably half of the drive.
The drive home consisted of:
All 3 Taylor Swift CD's (and us singing along to every single song) (we knew them all)
The entire One Direction CD, plus all of their live songs from the X-Factor
Lots of bathroom stops (like I said, we have a problem)
Lots of construction
Lots of chatting
Rolling down the windows on the Interstate (now that is an experience) (we're talking all the windows, music cranked, and the sun roof opened. talk about wind)
We found gas for $1.83 a gallon, but then we realized the gas station was closed...awkward...
I found cities in Alabama named Arkedelphia and Letohatchee, and those names are silly.
We finally got sunshine as the afternoon rolled around and made it home in about 7 hours.
Even though we got rained out every day and super sunburned (now it's a weird neon pink/purple color...weird...) it was one of the most fun trips and we didn't feel like we missed out on anything. Beach in the morning, shopping in the afternoon. I could get used to that :)

Florida {Part 1}: Alabama and copper possums
Howdy Ya'll!
I'm back from FLORIDA and quite frankly wish I was still there. Oh the beach....
Sorry, daydreaming again. But seriously, a super fun and relaxing trip resulting in megetting super tan getting too many freckles and becoming a lobster no matter how hard I tried not to (and I tried really really hard not to get sunburned!).
...after road construction...
and this is highway 87 for all you uneducated folk.
but highway 87 did allow for lots of singing with the windows rolled down because the speed limit was only 35...

Sorry, daydreaming again. But seriously, a super fun and relaxing trip resulting in me
[wednesday]
wednesday started out early because I had to pack. yes, I waited until about 20 minutes before I had to leave to pack, but I just hate it. (let's not even talk about unpacking. that's a whole different story)
but it all worked out and my friend Olivia came and picked me up around 7:30 (our friend Katelyn was going to come too, but she ended up not being able to)
Road trip essentials:
1. Fountain Drinks
2. Red Vine licorice
3. Lots and lots and lots of good music [aka cleverly planned playlists with great names. the names are just as important as the songs]
what can I say- red vines are way better as straws
road trip playlists:
1. must have a cool/ applicable title
2. must have at least one One Direction song
Our 6 1/2 hour drive through all of Alabama turned into an 8 hour drive because it turns out I'm not the only one with the bladder of a baby goat. Olivia has one too. So, 6 stops later (some were for gas and food, but there was always a run to the bathroom) (and it wasn't even because we had big drinks because I didn't even drink half of mine by the time we were done) we were finally ready to take our exit to Milton, Florida. Well....
we might have missed our exit.
but it's OK!
it only set us back 5 minutes and took us on a very long alternative route on highway 87. ever heard of it? I didn't think so. We and Alabama got to know each other very well
there was road construction...

but highway 87 did allow for lots of singing with the windows rolled down because the speed limit was only 35...
cute huh?
wednesday night was a barbeque and lots of talking but we were tired from the drive and had a long day at the beach planned the next day
[thursday]
thursday we headed out early for PENSACOLA
after driving about 20 min we finally saw the ocean! we were a little too excited. the windows came down once again and I tried to hold my breath while we were crossing all of the bridges, but there were too many and my poor lungs couldn't handle it! (you know you're supposed to hold your breath while you drive over bridges)
ocean air is the best!
the only stinky thing about the beach was that there was a storm rolling in that afternoon, so even though it was sunny and nice outside, the waves were "high hazard"- basically really big- and we could only go up to our ankles in the water
isn't the water beautiful?
I think I liked it a little too much...
happy after a morning/ early afternoon at the beach!
we left the beach in the early afternoon and drove 40 min back to Milton, which was perfect timing because it started raining after we left
we cleaned up at home and headed out to the antique shops in Milton- there's like 7 antique shops on one road!
we went to only 2 of them- The Copper Possum and Alyssa's- because they take hours to go through!
We did find some great treasures!
I got a really cool French phrases book from 1943, a really pretty vintage jacket/ but really a shirt, and the most beautiful teacup in the world. Seriously, what am I going to do with a teacup? I don't know but I had to get it- I mean, look!
beautiful, isn't it? and a steal, let me tell you I love antique shop prices! haha
after dinner Olivia and I went to go see Snow White and the Huntsman
nice eye candy, awesome dresses, and Kristen Stewart actually did a pretty good job. it turned out to be a really good movie
but I think my favorite part of the movie was seeing the Les Miserables trailer on the big screen before the movie. haha
a great and full day and thankfully the weather cooperated! stay tuned for {Part 2}
